What do Samsung refrigerator error codes 83E, 85E and 86E mean?

On Samsung refrigerators, 83E means abnormal compressor current, 85E means compressor under-voltage, and 86E means compressor over-voltage. Samsung says these can follow a power surge or brownout. Unplug the refrigerator or turn off its circuit breaker for 60 seconds, then restore power. If the code returns, a technician needs to check it.

What the code means

Samsung's support guide lists 83E as compressor abnormal current detection (a power surge or other electrical anomaly may have occurred), 85E as compressor under-voltage (a brownout may have occurred), and 86E as compressor over-voltage (a power surge may have occurred, such as during a thunderstorm).

Safe homeowner checks

  1. Unplug the refrigerator, or turn off its circuit breaker, for 60 seconds.
  2. Restore power and see whether the code clears.
  3. Don't open the back panel or test the outlet or wiring yourself.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if the code returns. Compressor, line-voltage and control-board diagnosis is technician-only work.
