What does Sub-Zero error code 40 2 40 mean?
On Sub-Zero Classic (BI) built-in refrigerators, code 40 2 40 means "excessive freezer run time" and 40 1 40 means "excessive refrigerator run time." The service icon turns on. Sub-Zero's service manual points to door leaks, a door left ajar, the refrigerant charge, or evaporator icing. Check doors and seals first. Anything else needs a technician.
What the code means
Sub-Zero's Classic BI service manual (serial numbers 4380000 and up) lists 40 1 40 as excessive refrigerator run time and 40 2 40 as excessive freezer run time, with the service icon on. The unit has been running longer than expected. The manual's checks are unit performance, door leaks, a door ajar, proper refrigerant charge in the system, and icing of the evaporator.
Safe homeowner checks
- Make sure every door and drawer closes fully and nothing (a shelf, bin or package) is holding one open.
- Look at the door gaskets for tears, gaps or flattened spots. Clean them with mild soap and water.
- Keep the doors closed for a few hours so the unit can recover, then see whether the service icon is still on.
- Don't chip ice, open panels, or move the unit out of its built-in cabinet.
When to call a technician
Call a technician if the code returns, temperatures keep rising, or you see frost building up inside. Checking the refrigerant charge is sealed-system work, and diagnosing evaporator icing or electrical parts requires a trained technician. These are not DIY jobs.
