What does Whirlpool dishwasher error code 8-1 mean?

On Whirlpool dishwashers covered by Whirlpool's tech sheet W10751166, code 8-1 means "Draining: Slow Drain." Water is leaving too slowly. Whirlpool points to a blocked drain path, such as a plugged garbage disposal, a disposal knock-out plug that was never removed, a stuck drain-loop check valve or plugged hoses. A broken drain pump impeller is the other cause.

What the code means

In Whirlpool's service tech sheet W10751166, function 8 is Draining and problem 1 is Slow Drain. The tech sheet's first check is for a blockage anywhere from the sump check valve to your home's plumbing. On models with lights, the Clean or Complete light flashes 8, pauses, then flashes 1. On models with a display, it shows F8 and then E1.

Safe homeowner checks

  1. If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, run the disposal with cold water to clear it.
  2. If the garbage disposal was installed recently, its knock-out plug may never have been removed. Whirlpool lists this as a cause. Ask the installer or a technician to check it.
  3. Look at the drain hose under the sink for kinks or crushed spots.
  4. Run a new cycle. If 8-1 comes back, stop there.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if the code returns. The other causes on Whirlpool's list are a stuck drain-loop check valve, plugged hoses, and a fractured drain pump impeller, which means removing and inspecting the drain pump. Drain motor faults (8-2) and a drain stuck on (8-3) involve the control board, so they are technician-only.
