Why is the Clean light flashing on my Whirlpool dishwasher?

On Whirlpool dishwashers covered by Whirlpool's tech sheet W10751166, a flashing Clean light means the control found a problem and saved an error code. Some models have a Complete light instead. Each code has two numbers, such as 6-1 for low or no water or 8-1 for a slow drain. A few have simple checks; most need a technician.

What the flashing light means

Whirlpool's tech sheet W10751166 says a flashing Clean LED means the control is reporting a fault from its self-diagnostics. Codes have a function number and a problem number. In service diagnostics, the light flashes the first number, pauses for 2 seconds, flashes the second number, then pauses for 5 seconds. Display models show the code as F and E numbers. The control keeps up to four codes, newest first.

When to call a technician

Most other codes on Whirlpool's list point to the control board, the temperature sensor, the heater, the wash or drain motor, or the diverter. These need electrical testing and parts replacement, so they are technician-only. Don't try the service diagnostics key sequence yourself: Whirlpool's tech sheet says starting it clears the status and last-run information from memory, which a technician uses to find the fault.
