What does Whirlpool dishwasher error code 6-1 mean?

On Whirlpool dishwashers covered by Whirlpool's tech sheet W10751166, code 6-1 means "Inlet Water: Low/No Water." The dishwasher did not get enough water. Whirlpool lists the water supply being off, dishes holding water, water siphoning out the drain, a leak, a plugged fill valve screen, or a stuck float switch. Check the water supply and loading first.

What the code means

Whirlpool's service tech sheet W10751166 uses two-part codes. The first number is the function and the second is the problem. Function 6 is Inlet Water and problem 1 is Low/No Water (a mechanical problem). On models with lights, the Clean or Complete light flashes the first number, pauses, then flashes the second. On models with a display, it shows F6 and then E1.

Safe homeowner checks

  1. Make sure the water supply valve to the dishwasher (usually under the sink) is turned fully on.
  2. Look at how the dishwasher is loaded. Bowls or pots that are flipped the wrong way can catch and hold the wash water.
  3. Check the drain hose under the sink. Whirlpool says it should loop up and attach to the side of the dishwasher, or connect to a drain at least 20 inches (50.8 cm) off the floor, so water does not siphon out while it fills.
  4. Look under the dishwasher for leaks. If you find water, turn off the water supply and call a technician.
  5. Run a new cycle. If 6-1 comes back, stop there.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if the code returns after these checks. The other causes on Whirlpool's list are a fill valve or water line plugged with debris, an overfill float switch stuck in the overfill position, and a fill valve electrical problem. Fixing these means disconnecting the water line and testing electrical parts with a meter, so they are not DIY jobs.
