Why is the service icon flashing on my Sub-Zero refrigerator?
On Sub-Zero Built-In (BI) refrigerators, a flashing service icon means a major fault code has been logged. Without a chime, it points to a threatening temperature problem or uncleared codes. Flashing with a chime means immediate action is needed: temperature problems, possible appliance damage, or a flood warning. A technician reads and clears the codes.
What the code means
Sub-Zero's BI Series service manual explains that a flashing service icon without a chime means a major fault code was logged (threatening temperature problems) and/or fault codes were not cleared after viewing. Flashing with the alarm chiming means a major fault requiring immediate action: temperature problems and/or possible appliance damage, or a flood warning (water through the flow meter with no call for water). Fault code families include 15 (relay faults) and 90 (control faults); many of those codes call for replacing the control board.
Safe homeowner checks
- Check that all doors are fully closed.
- If the alarm is chiming and you see water, turn off the water supply to the refrigerator.
- Move perishable food if temperatures are rising.
- Do not open panels, test wiring, or replace parts yourself.
When to call a technician
Call a technician to read the fault code, repair the cause, and clear the codes. Relay and control-board faults are technician-only work.
